Artist Statement
"Protection" is a sculpture that portrays my personality through the use of three basic shapes: Cube, Octahedron and Sphere, combined with staple, formex, and paper. I drew inspiration from the renowned artist Sol LeWitt and his artwork "Five Open Geometric Structures". By experimenting with different geometric shapes, materials, and colors, I aimed to highlight the contrast between my exterior appearance and my inner self.
The black-colored Cube and Octahedron structures, made from hard metal, symbolize unluckiness, heaviness, and depression. These shapes reflect my tough and unfriendly exterior. On the other hand, the bright orange paper-like texture of the Sphere represents energy, positivity, and strength, revealing the person I am on the inside.
Upon closer examination, the Cube and Octahedron shapes can be seen protecting the Sphere. The squares and triangles that make up these shapes represent strength and rigidity. Meanwhile, the Sphere's circular shape signifies its weakness and fragility, which depicts my tough exterior as a natural defense mechanism. Overall, "Protection" invites the audience to look beyond my tough exterior and get to know my true self.
