Artist Statement
Hoan Kiem District: A Personal and Cultural Influence
Growing up in Hanoi, the Hoan Kiem district has been a significant part of my childhood. My life and artwork have always been heavily influenced by this district and its well-known historical sites, such as the Turtle Tower and The Huc Bridge. With the theme "Self-Identities & Influences," I have incorporated my identity and cultural impact into my paintings, "Hoan Kiem and Eye" and "Hoan Kiem in me".
In "Hoan Kiem and Eye," I have depicted the Turtle Tower in my eye, using floral brush strokes underneath. Through this painting, I intend to express my admiration for the beauty of Hoan Kiem Lake, which leaves me speechless and overwhelmed. The emotions I experienced during my childhood are reflected in the color palette and lighting of the painting. Inspired by Fauvism, I have used bright, non-naturalistic colors and oil pastels to create textured brushwork. Like the Fauvism and Expressionism art movements, I believe that the most important aspect of art is to stay true to the artist's feelings rather than being faithful to reality.
